Where did you do your work experience?

Leeds

What did you do?

During my two-week work experience programme, I completed a two-day placement on a cardiothoracic ward.

I enjoyed the learning side in the classroom which allowed me to fully appreciate how everything works within the hospital, but I thoroughly enjoyed how hands on it was. It gave me a taste of what working in a hospital would be like and it was nothing like I expected... it was better!

What did you enjoy most?

The hands-on area on the ward. Although I directly deal with the patients, I shadowed a few doctors on their rounds and they really helped me to get an understanding of patients' problems.

What did you learn?

How to make beds properly and how important hygiene is in a hospital.

Some nurses also taught me how to prepare a patient for surgery and explained what a career in phlebotomy is all about.

Do you have any advice for other people?

Whatever you may think working within a hospital is like, nothing beats a little taster and the work experience programme within the NHS trust was perfect.
