Where did you do your work experience?

Coventry

What did you do?

I was based in the resuscitation training department where medical students, junior doctors and staff are trained.

The department has state-of-the-art equipment including a 'living' mannequin (dummy) which can display various symptoms for trainee staff to diagnose during training and examinations. I sat in the control room for the mannequin and it was really interesting to watch how it was controlled and learn about the conditions the junior doctors had to diagnose and treat.

I also sat in on some of the training sessions that staff have to attend annually. All the staff were really nice to me and I was allowed to have a go at the CPR we had been taught on the dummy.

As well as that, I assisted my mentor with various administration tasks and went on a round of some wards to speak to some patients.

It was a great week!

What did you enjoy most?

I really enjoyed watching the medical students because this is where I hope to see myself in years to come.

What did you learn?

I learnt a lot about various conditions that the medical students and junior doctors were assessed on, as well as how to do CPR.

Do you have any advice for other people?

Don't feel afraid to ask staff questions because they will most likely be happy to answer with information that may really help you.

Also, ask your mentor for a reference because this could also be very helpful in the future.
