Where did you do your work experience?

Birmingham

What did you do?

I got to follow doctors such as paediatricians who work with children from birth to adolescence.

I worked with the midwives who deal with pregnant mothers and I got to examine a mother using a blood pressure monitor. I also went to an antenatal course with the midwives which was about episiotomy (opening up the perineum so the baby can come out during birth and then stitching it back up).

I was given a clinical task which was working with fake models to identify conditions. I searched for lumps on the model's breast and tried to identify breast cancer.

What did you enjoy most?

I enjoyed every single moment of the experience.

What did you learn?

I gained communication skills and confidence. I learnt about the atmosphere of the hospital - how it works, how they manage every doctor and what they do.

Do you have any advice for other people?

If you want to go into a medical career, you should definitely find work experience in the NHS to give you ideas of what you want to do. It will look good when you attend university as they would probably want you to have some experience before you do the course.
