Where did you do your work experience?

Birmingham

What did you do?

I shadowed a team of doctors in the paediatric assessment unit on their rounds in the morning. I also visited the neurosurgery ward and shadowed the nurses. I sat with the consultants of the neurosurgery ward and learnt a lot about what they do and how the consultant got to where he is now. I listened to talks from a paediatrician, chaplain, neurophysiologist and a general anaesthetist.

What did you enjoy most?

Shadowing the doctors and clinicians and getting a better understanding of how they deal with patients effectively. I also liked talking to the neurosurgeons.

What did you learn?

I learnt what nurses have to deal with and how busy their day can be. I also gained a better understanding of how the trust copes with pressured situations and how children are treated differently to adults.

Do you have any advice for other people?

I would advise anyone interested in a medical career, or even just wanting to work in a hospital should sort out a placement with their local trust. It will help you make a better decision if you really do want to work in a medical environment. It will also help you make the right decision about what you would like to specialise in.
