Where did you do your work experience?
Peterborough
What did you do?
For my work experience I spent a week on an orthopaedic ward where patients are treated for things like hip replacements and knee surgery. I got to spend a lot of time following up patient stories and learning about the different steps that the staff go through to make decisions about a patient's healthcare.
I also spent a day at a very busy fracture clinic where I got to see the side of the hospital that deals with outpatients and follow up appointments.
What did you enjoy most?
My favourite day was in the fracture clinic. It was very busy and I felt in my element as I was given a lot of responsibility. The staff were so friendly and funny even though it was so busy!
What did you learn?
I learnt about a lot of different roles in the ward that I did not know about. My work experience really helped me realise I want to be very involved in patient care and not just decision making.
Do you have any advice for other people?
Ask as many questions as possible! At lunch, I plucked up the courage to ask the nurses and doctors some questions and I learnt a lot from them about the training I need and the lifestyle that comes with different jobs.
Also, make contacts. One doctor has been helpful answering my questions by email.
Just be confident and enjoy the week!
