Where did you do your work experience?

Nottingham

What did you do?

For my five-day work experience, I shadowed a consultant within the oncology (cancer) department. This included speaking to the patients, reviewing their individual care and learning about other departments that are connected to oncology such as radiotherapy.

On my last day, I spent time with the research team and learned about the clinical trials the department carries out.

What did you enjoy most?

I enjoyed interacting with patients the most. It was extremely satisfying to see the progress they were making and very interesting to see what happened when medications didn't work as well as hoped.

What did you learn?

I learned many things during my time at the hospital, but mainly just how dedicated and hard working medical staff have to be. They are truly an inspiration.

Do you have any advice for other people?

Make sure that you apply for work experience early, as places are sparse.

I would also recommend that you apply for work experience in the area that interests you most, as it will make the experience much more wholesome. Importantly, it will give you an idea of what you want to do in the future.
