Where did you do your work experience?
Cambridge
What did you do?
My work experience placement was mainly spent shadowing doctors and other healthcare professionals on the orthopaedic and elderly care wards of a hospital. I did several ward rounds where the registrar explained each patient’s condition and treatment as well as the x-rays.
I also attended a meeting where the healthcare team discussed each patient’s care. As well as deciding whether a patient could go home, they also talked about those patients whose health had worsened and the possible reasons for it. I was surprised by how many decisions are made behind the scenes and not on the wards.
As well as seeing patients needing hip replacements, I observed blood being taken for analysis. I even saw a patient’s gangrenous foot. Although it was unpleasant for the patient, it was fascinating to see the team discussing whether they would need surgery.
What did you enjoy most?
I most enjoyed my visit to the endoscopy department. I was fascinated to learn about a wide range of different endoscopic procedures and it was intriguing to learn why these procedures are done. Sometimes, it is just a simple check-up, while other times it is used as a diagnostic tool. It was also a welcome change from the ward rounds.
What did you learn?
Overall, I had an interesting week. I gained valuable insight into the workings of a hospital, especially how the healthcare team work together to facilitate a patient’s recovery.
Before my placement, I didn't know what a clerical worker was, let alone know how important they are to the running of a ward! Without them, patients' notes and letters wouldn't get written, which would have a huge impact on patient care.
My week at the hospital will play an important part in mapping my future career.
Do you have any advice for other people?
Make the most of your opportunity. The week went so quickly and before I knew it I was back at school, realising there were loads of questions I should have asked. It's a good idea to stay in touch with some of the people you meet as well.
